Hypothetical Dystopia

Coming out is dangerous. There’s a reason a large production is made out of it, and it’s because there are serious risks involved in coming out; risks of being outcast by your community, cut off from family and friends. Unemployed and homeless, kept out of some housing markets and potential jobs. Limited in terms of the relationships you can pursue. Coming out comes with inherent dangers and everyone needs to weigh the risks and benefits for themselves without the added social pressure of being informed that they are letting down the team if they don’t expose themselves in that way. It’s hard enough to make a coherent decision about such a personal matter when you know you will probably be supported and helped through the process; even worse when you live in a dangerous climate and know that coming out could be fatal.

I’m trying REALLY HARD to not post anything about this whole Chick-Fil-A situation that some idiot Christians have created. As a Christian I am so ashamed to even be calling myself a Christian. But I don’t want to get right in the middle of it. I don’t want hate messages, hate tweets, or hate…

Some people are using their Christianity as an excuse to engage in discrimination, oppression, and hatred against people who identify as LGBTQ.

Christianity should not completely define someone’s political opinions; it is only a facet of a person’s identity. Religion can be an institution, an ideology, a lifestyle, or personal beliefs - it’s different for everyone. Frankly, I wish you didn’t have to apologize for an entire religion. But please don’t silence yourself, because every voice brings something to the conversation (and I really like your tumblr too).

You are so right! It sounds simple but I seriously never realized that people are using their Christianity as an excuse to engage in such evil behavior and such hateful acts!

Although I would say that to be a Christian is the person’s identity and should affect every aspect of the individual’s life, I agree with you that, since the bible is not clear cut, it doesn’t define one’s political opinions. But sadly, the stereotype says that it does! And unfortunately, many of so called “Christians” are blindly following this Westernized view and practice of Christianity. It’s a culture… it’s no longer a faith, sadly! And I hate that!

Thanks for saying you enjoy my blog! Thanks for the encouragement! :)

Yes, to clarify, I probably should have wrote “it shouldn’t have to completely define someone’s political arguments” instead of saying “it should not completely define one’s political opinions.” (I always try to remain secular when it comes to politics, but religion does play a part, even if bible verses are not used as a justification for one’s political stances. For me, my religion influences me especially in valuing the concept of tzedakah.)

This isn’t about mutual tolerance because there’s nothing mutual about it. If we agree to disagree on this issue, you walk away a full member of this society and I don’t. There is no “live and let live” on this issue because Dan Cathy is spending millions to very specifically NOT let me live. I’m not trying to do that to him.

Asking for “mutual tolerance” on this like running up to a bully beating a kid to death on the playground and scolding them both for not getting along. I’m not trying to dissolve Mr. Cathy’s marriage or make his sex illegal. I’m not trying to make him a second-class citizen, or get him killed. He’s doing that to me, folks; I’m just fighting back.

All your life, you’re told to stand up to bullies, but when WE do it, we’re told WE are the ones being intolerant? Well, okay. Yes. I refuse to tolerate getting my ass kicked. “Guilty as charged.”

But what are you guilty of? When you see a bully beating up a smaller kid and you don’t take a side, then you ARE taking a side. You’re siding with the bully. And when you cheer him on, you’re revealing something about your own character that really is a shame.

Are We Getting Closer to Repealing the Ban on Gay Blood Donors?
After the mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado, GOOD’s Andrew Price wrote an article suggesting that one meaningful response to the tragedy is to donate blood. The idea resonated with several people in the GOOD community and prompted an important conversation. Many commenters pointed out that they couldn’t give blood even if they wanted to, because they’re gay.

It’s a valid question, and my answer is ‘nice try.’

GOP presidential candidate MITT ROMNEY, when asked “Do you personally think homosexuality is a sin?” by CNN’s Piers Morgan on the June 7, 2011 edition of Morgan’s show.

Why doesn’t he just stick with that as a stock answer?

Is London ready for the Olympics?  ”Nice try.”  What’s your opinion of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict?  ”Nice try.”  Are you really fit to be President?  ”Nice try.”

Yes. Nice try getting me to say out loud that yes, I do, in fact, believe that. Way too smart to be forthcoming about my very troubling beliefs that could have very severe implications for civil rights and domestic policymaking.

Ignoring my usual ignore Mitt Romney policy to poke my head in and say I hate that smug, tone deaf, arrogant piece of shit. So, so, so much.

YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE SO MIGHT AS WELL SPEAK YOUR MIND YOU JALOPY OF A HUMAN BEING. Barack went ahead and did it. He’s not trying to appease his haters, I don’t know why you are trying to. And if you are actually AGAINST your base on the issue, WHY ARE YOU RUNNING ON THEIR TICKET.

You would think he would say ‘yes’ and be proud of being homophobic.

DeSales University: allow each student to “be who (they) are and be that well!”

DeSales has previously denied all attempts to form a LGBT student organization:

A few examples to reflect on...”We are the only LVAIC school to not have such an opportunity. When I was an RA my sophomore year, I put up a flyer on my bulletin board about Gay History month, and I got in a lot of trouble. An openly gay male freshman moved onto campus last year and that day the roommates mother charged into res life saying she could not have her son living with a gay male. DeSales is only adding to the fire of the belief that being Gay is shameful and despicable which leads to loss of lives.” ~class of 2011

“When I was an RA in the freshman guys dorm, a student had the word ‘FAG’ engraved on his door and I was told ‘nothing’ could be done because ‘sexual orientation’ was not in the non-discrimination policy of the university” ~class of 2010”

Will DeSales University allow a LGBT student group to form?

“An online petition currently circulating hopes that DeSales University will reconsider the decision to not allow a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) student-run organization on campus.

DeSales alumnus Tom Gallagher posted a petition on Change.org early Monday in response to repeated denials by university officials to allow an LGBT student group to form on campus.

The petition reads:

Each student at DeSales University is told repeatedly to “be who you are and be that well” per the direction of St. Francis de Sales. This is a wonderful motto but currently excludes LGBT students and alumni. The university has repeatedly denied requests to allow a Gay Straight Alliance on campus and has even turned down an application for a PRIDE DSU club which sought to celebrate diversity on campus. Meanwhile, 16 Catholic Colleges in Pennsylvania have officially recognized pro-homosexual clubs, LGBTQ Resource Centers, or student organizations according to a recent poll.

IT IS TIME that we stand up for our fellow bulldogs and allow each person to live out the Salesian motto and “Be who you are and be that well” without threat of persecution or harassment.

The lack of an LGBT organization sends a message to prospective students, says Equality PA president (and Lehigh Valley resident) Adrian Shanker. “Having a student-run [LGBT] organization on campus is certainly an indicator as to whether the campus will be an affirming and welcoming place for students,” said Shanker. “It’s certainly not a surprise that the campus lacks a student group, but it does send a signal to those considering the college.”

DeSales also lacks a sexual orientation clause in its non-discrimination policy.

Other colleges in the Lehigh Valley — Lehigh University, Lafayette College, Moravian College, Cedar Crest College and Muhlenberg College — all have student-run LGBT organizations, as well as non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation. Kutztown University and Northampton Community College also have LGBT groups on campus and non-discrimination clauses. Lehigh Carbon Community College has a non-discrimination clause.

“It sends the message that ‘we don’t want LGBT students here,’” said Shanker. “DeSales may have to right to, and may be legally allowed to discriminate, but why would they want to?” ” - Elizabeth Rich

Actively denying the formation of LGBT groups and groups dedicated to diversity is nothing short of discrimination, but not by their standards - sexual orientation can be discriminated against according to DeSales’ policies. Let’s see if DeSales can understand that their motto “be who you are and be that well” should be truly inclusive.
