Hypothetical Dystopia

“That is our generation’s task.. to make life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness real for EVERY American… it does require us to act in our time.. we have the obligation to shape the debates of our time… with passion and dedication let us answer the call of history…” - Pres. Barack Obama

Raising the minimum wage won’t even come up for a vote in Speaker John Boehner’s House. We need a Democratic majority and Speaker Pelosi for that, just as we did in 2006 when Republicans had been blocking minimum wage increases for years. If ever you’re tempted to think there’s not enough difference between Democrats and Republicans to bother voting, remember that Democrats are the ones trying to give 28 million workers a raise in a way that will stimulate the economy.

Immigration Discretion Should Officially Include Same-Sex Couples, House Democrats Argue  →

onrightsideofhistory:

Immigration Discretion

WASHINGTON —- More than 80 House Democrats called Wednesday for the government to officially state that same-sex relationships would be considered in immigration decisions, a year after the Obama administration announced it would begin allowing some undocumented immigrants to stay if they had significant family ties to the United States.

There was a unanimous decision in the drafting committee to include it in the platform…everybody was for it.

— Retiring Rep. Barney Frank • On the inclusion of gay marriage as part of the official Democratic Party platform. The 15-member Democratic Party platform draft committee unanimously approved language supporting marriage equality, and according to Frank, a member of the committee, the vote wasn’t even close. The draft still has to be approved by the full platform committee, which meets in two weeks; then, delegates at the Democratic National Convention will have to vote in favor of it it. Huffington Post, which talked to two sources on the matter, claims that “the deal is more or less final.” Reacting to the news, the president of the National Organization for Marriage said that Democrats “can kiss the presidential election, the House and now the Senate goodbye.” What do you think—will this help or hurt Democrats in November?  source (viafollow)

Obama gives states more power to handle welfare implementation on their own; Republicans accuse him of "gutting" the law →

stfuconservatives:

Last Thursday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that it would grant states waivers from work requirements under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program, in order to let them “test alternative and innovative strategies, policies, and procedures that are designed to improve employment outcomes for needy families.”

The move rankled conservative intellectuals, who questioned its legality and lamented that it leaves the law toothless. Top Republicans and their presidential nominee Mitt Romney reflected that anger, accusing Obama of wanting to make people dependent on government handouts.

Today’s question: why are “states’ rights” sacred and all-powerful when a conservative invokes them, but evil when Obama does it?

I’m going to eliminate every non-essential, expensive program I can find, that includes Obamacare,

Republican presidential candidate MITT ROMNEY, essentially telling 30 million Americans without health insurance that they’re “non-essential.”

Good job, Mitt.

(via The Huffington Post)

Let’s see, what would Republicans consider essential?

The military. Tax cuts for the rich. Subsidies for oil companies. Creationism.

Everyone else? Sorry, the Republicans don’t care.
